Position title: Associate Professor, UW-Madison, Department of Soil Science

Thea Whitman’s research is in soil biogeochemistry and microbiology, and includes an emphasis on soil carbon cycling, wildfires, and pyrogenic organic matter or “biochar.” Her publications include consideration of greenhouse gas accounting in renewable biomass systems, incorporation of biochar into carbon accounting mechanisms, and the potential of biochar to contribute to climate change mitigation, in addition to lab and field research on soil microbiology and biogeochemistry. Her lab’s research is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the National Science Foundation, and other sources.
